Found, Not Forced

There are so many things I adore about our God, and one of them is highlighted in my heart today: His gentleness. He’s a gentleman. He doesn’t force Himself on us. He gives us the free will to seek Him.
As I was reading Jeremiah, the deep sorrow that fell on him was consuming me. The weight of his calling was heavy. His people rejected him. Jeremiah was lonely, discouraged, and walking through a valley of pain.
I think we’ve all experienced loneliness or rejection, maybe even from our own people. I could relate to Jeremiah as I read.

Then my eyes landed on Jeremiah 15:16:
“Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart, for I bear your name, Lord God of Armies.”

I won’t hide the truth that I had to stop, back up, and read it several times. As I did, I realized I was doing exactly what the verse described. I was eating the words.

That may sound strange, but when we eat, we consume, digest, and are nourished. When we slow down and ponder Scripture, we allow it to seep into our hearts and minds.

The Lord didn’t push this verse on me. I found it. I was seeking, studying, reading, and there it was. He’s not a forceful God. He is a God of peace, love, gentleness, and kindness.

Like Jeremiah, after I found the words, digested them, and was nourished by them, I found a peace and joy that only comes from God. It’s different. The message sits differently.

The last part of the verse didn’t grab me at first: “For I bear your name.” But as I sat with it, I began to understand its significance.

I was given my birth name, but when I became a Christian, I took on an identity I chose. Bearing His name means I represent Him. I belong to Him. I am His, and He is mine.

I do believe God seeks us and reveals Himself to us, but we choose to believe, accept, and follow.
That truth brings a deep-rooted joy to my heart—not temporary happiness, but joy that comes from a
relationship with God. A joy that survives hard times.

That same joy is available to you. It won’t be forced upon you. You have the freedom to choose it.
